VLM500-MID

Non-contact length measurement for calibratable length measuring machines

MessEG and MID - Measuring Instruments Directive

If measuring devices are used in the public interest or in commercial or official transactions, the "Law on the placing and making available on the market, use and calibration of measuring devices and on pre-packaging" (Mess- und Eichgesetz, MessEG) must be observed. This calibration obligation also applies to length measuring devices and length measuring machines.
The Measuring Instruments Directive 2004/22/EC (MID) was issued by the European Parliament for the purpose of harmonising legislation on the provision of measuring instruments in the European Member States. It came into force on 30 October 2006. It was transposed into German law in 2007 by amending the Measuring Instruments Act (MessEG), and the amendment to the MID, Directive 2014/32/EU, came into force on 20 April 2016.

PTB-approved Counter

The non-contact optical VLM500-MID is a speed and length measuring device that complies with the software guidelines of the European Measuring Instruments Directive MID 2014/32/EU. It is a counter pre-tested by the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) for use in length measuring devices or length measuring machines (MI-009). In terms of type approval, the devices in the VLM500 series are regarded as counters. They are therefore part of a length measuring device. A type certificate is available for the VLM500-MID, which consists of the familiar VLM500 sensor and the CDB display and memory unit. This simplifies integration into a length measuring machine.

VLM500-MID

The VLM500-MID is based on the successful non-contact optical speed-length measuring device VLM500. In the VLM500, the spatial filter principle is realised on the basis of a CCD sensor. Spatial filter is the generic term for a measuring principle for the optical determination of the speed and/or length of moving materials.

The spatial filter is based on the filter effect of grid-shaped structures (grid modulation). The function of the VLM500 can be described in simple terms as follows: The measurement object is imaged through a lens onto a CCD line, which works as an optical grid (no image acquisition). The VLM500 is equipped with an LED light source to illuminate the measurement object. Due to the grid modulation, a signal frequency proportional to the speed is generated when the object moves. The speed is calculated in the device from the measured signal frequency. Various control circuits allow automatic adaptation to a wide variety of materials.

The VLM500 makes hardly any demands on the surface quality of the object to be measured: Precise measurements can be taken on periodic structures of textiles in the same way as on stochastic surfaces of metals, wood, rubber or paper.
The recorded length values are displayed on the screen of the CDB and permanently stored in the CDB in compliance with MID standards (min. 90 days) at the end of a measurement process. Furthermore, the data can be printed directly or transferred to an optional industry-typical data interface (serial or fieldbus).

Robust and precise
Thanks to its robust construction, the VLM500-MID is designed for use in harsh industrial environments and makes it possible to measure speed and length in a variety of production processes without slippage. High measurement dynamics and accuracy are achieved.

Low service requirements
Due to the non-contact measuring principle, the VLM500 not only works more accurately than slip-based rolling systems, but also without friction-related wear, which minimises service requirements. Damage to or contamination of the surface to be measured is therefore impossible.

Flexible and versatile
The VLM500-MID works autonomously. Sensor, lighting, signal processing and power supply are integrated in the device. The comprehensive parameterisation options provide the user with a wide range of functions that guarantee flexible use. Among other things, detection and output times, sliding averaging or the scaling of speed and length outputs can be parameterised. All devices are bus-compatible (RS232, RS422/RS485, USB, Profibus, Profinet, EtherNet/IP, TCP/IP) and can be synchronised. Thanks to its interfaces, the VLM500 can be easily integrated into existing processes, control systems or process data acquisition. It is easy to set up and parameterise (the VLMTool parameterisation software is available free of charge).
